The lighting is pretty on my aquarium and good for my fish
Very nice. Bright for day, can be put on dim for night. My fish seems very happy with his lighting.

Nice for my 10 gallon tank
I just received this a couple of days ago. I wanted to post a review for those who had questions like I did before I bought this product. Maybe this can help. I also want to thank the reviewers who posted great reviews about this product, you'all helped me to decide to order this instead of buying a different product at the store. 1. I have a Marineland 10 gal tank that is about 5 years old. The old hood with the light bulbs just started to fall apart. It lasted a long time considering that it had water deposits on it. I was actually a bit afraid of it as the bulbs would detach from their screw in part but would somehow still be working and producing light, even though it was only attached by filaments. I would replace the bulbs even if they still worked on a regular basis to try to keep this from happening, but sometimes I was too late. Finally the whole electrical unit just seemed loose. It seemed like an electrical shock just waiting to happen so I decided to replace it. 2. I love the light on this hood. It is bright, crisp and the blue moon light is gorgeous. I only wish the light bar was a bit longer, as the edges of the tank are a bit too dark, but not enough to remove a star from my review. I moved around my silk plants and now it looks excellent. The blue lights make some colors really pop out. 3. My old hood had open ended covers for the lights, I assume because of the heat they produced. This, like I mentioned above, allowed water to corrode the bulbs themselves. This new LED hood has the light unit as a separate entity that is placed on the hood itself and snapped in (though a bit loosely, I plan on removing it for water changes to prevent it from falling out). This is great as there is an entire solid clear plastic shield between the light unit and the water. The light unit does not get wet, so I'm hoping it will last a long time. Being LED it is of course much cooler. 4. This new hood is hinged onto the back of the tank, unlike the old one that just sat on the tank. I really like this feature as I no longer worry about the hood slipping into the tank and electrocuting everything. The hinges are attached separately and securely, but like I noted before, this is a Marineland tank so the hinges are designed for this tank, and maybe will not work for others. There are two hinges but a third one was included with the kit in case one breaks. I have not had problems with the water flowing out of the hood out of the tank area, as some have reported. I find I can lift the hood to feed the fish with no problem. There is also a small door in front that slides out for that purpose, but I would rather just lift the hood. This is also an attractive hood with a low profile. 5. My 10 gal Marineland tank measures 20 in by 10 in exactly. On the top of the tank but slightly inside there runs a little ledge that the old hood sat on, and this one is the same. So because it has to fit inside the top of the tank, this hood is a bit smaller, at about 19 1/8 inch by 9 1/4 inch, according to my measurements. The cut out for the filter is about 6 1/2" by about 2 1/2 inches. My filter and heater fit inside this nicely. There is another small hole for a heater cord to fit through, if needed. 5A The box this came in says 20 x 10 in Fits *most* 20" x 10" aquariums as well as 10, 16 extra high and 20 extra high. 6. As another reviewer noted, my fish seem happier. My neons come out more from the shadows, the other fish seem perkier in a non-neurotic way too. I don't know if it is because of the quality of the light, or that it doesn't throw out heat, or something else I can't guess. 7. The blue moon light!! ! Mentioning it again because it's awesome. I'll update this review as time goes on to check the durability of this product. But if is like my old Marineland hood, it will probably last, even if it becomes a danger to the fish and people around it hehehe. ~ Shay

A review that may answer some questions
If you've read some of the reviews about this product, you probably came away a bit confused. I know I was. There were reviews that said it was cheap and didn't work to other comments that said it was a great product. So which ones were true, I thought. Only one way to find out; I purchased one. Here is what I found out. This review is for the 20-inch LED hood and are specific to this hood size. Bright lights -------------- As far as adequate lighting, there is more than enough to fill up a 10-gallon tank. I don't know why others have complained about the lack of lighting. I found it quite bright when compared to my old incandescent lights, and the slight falloff of brightness in the corners is just nitpicking, in my opinion. It is barely perceptible. Plants like it --------------- As far as being good for plants, the LED lamps are doing a fine job providing enough lighting for them to grow. None of them have died, and if anything, appear to be as healthy or better than with incandescent lighting. Cheap or not? ------------- Some reviews said the hood was cheaply made. On this point, this all depends on what you consider cheap. The hood itself is well made, but it isn't of the thickest plastic that I usually expect in aquarium hoods. The fit was just right, but the hood did not fit flush on top of the fish tank. I did a little adjustment with the clips that attached the light to the hood and it straightened out nicely. Filter panels -------------- The opening on the back of the hood, for hang on the back filters, measures about 6 and 7/8s inches. There was enough room for my filter plus a little space left over to place my aquarium heater next to it. For filters that are wider, you will need to cut or saw the plastic to make the openings wider for your use. If you've got an air stone at the back of the aquarium like I do, you'll see a significant amount of water splash onto the back of the hood. This didn't look too good for the light switch so all I did was to cut a piece of filter foam to cover the exposed hood area area. Problem solved. You can also cut a piece of stiff clear plastic from a package to do this as well. If you've got a water filter that splashes water upon its reentry into the aquarium, a similar solution will also fix this. LED protection --------------- There is a little plastic shield that covers the LED light, and I found that this completely shields the LED lights from any water that splashes onto this area. The light was securely snapped into place, and when the hood is opened, it does not fall out as others have indicated. But it will fall out if the hood is opened at a 90-degree angle. The hood can be propped up with a small spoon or fork if you need to clean or vacuum the tank, and it's really no big deal to lift the hood to feed your fish. It only takes a micro-calorie to do this. There is a little slide out door that you can remove to leave a little opening to feed your fish, but I have left it on to make the hood look more uniform. Clean and healthy design ------------------------- The main reason why I purchased this hood was because of two reasons. I suspected that my old incandescent hood was slowly leeching bad metals into the water because the metal parts were rusting from the moisture, and the excessive algae growing underneath the hood was really unsightly. The LED hood is free of metal parts, and it is healthier for my tropical fish. I also like the low profile design of the hood. It makes the tank look sleeker. Easy assembly; read the directions ----------------------------------- Setting up the hood on my fish tank took about a half an hour because I wanted to make sure I understood the directions on how to attach the hood clips at the back of the tank. You actually have to angle the clips down at a 45-degree angle and then lift up so the other side of the clip can attach underneath the aquarium frame. There are two sizes of clips so make sure you use the right ones. Once this is done, you have to apply pressure to the joints of the hood, on top of the clips, in order for the two to snap together. No a whole lot of force is needed, but you do have to angle your push so that it is directed exactly downward on the clips. The instructions saved me a lot of hassle, so you may want to read them carefully. One thing that should be noted is that the opening at the back of the hood, for a HOB (hang of back) filter is about 6.5 inches wide. If you place an aquarium heater in this space alongside the filter, you'll just have enough room for both. But if you have a larger HOB filter, you'll need to cut away some of the plastic to accommodate a wider filter. I used a Dremel-like tool to cut away the extra plastic and a Fluval C2 filter now fits nicely in this area. It's too bad the manufacture didn't allow for snap-off sections to make the filter opening larger. LED Performance ---------------- Switching over to LED from incandescent was a bit of a shock as the light spectrum of LEDs is definitely on the bluer side as opposed to incandescent bulbs which are more yellow. This lighting really makes everything pop in the fish tank, but since it is a bit weak on the red spectrum, reds and yellows don't come out as much. The blue moonlight feature is an extra bonus and I've watched my fish during the night under this lighting. They seem to like it, although I haven't left it on all night yet. After about a week of getting used to the LED lights, I prefer these over my old lights. Family members are envious of how the tank looks in comparison with their regular light bulb setups. They've noticed that the tank now looks very sharp and "professional," whatever that means, lol. You may not like the bluish-green tint of these lights, so take this into consideration if you are thinking about buying this unit. Conclusion ----------- This hood is a great bargain, and only time will tell if it is long lasting as well. But for what I paid for it, which is essentially the same price I would have had to pay for a similar incandescent set up with those horrific rusting metal parts, I would say that this LED hood is well worth it for the health of my fish and the overall look of the tank. Plus it uses less energy and puts out virtually no heat--a plus when the weather gets hot. This hood isn't perfect, but for what it does, it definitely is a good aquarium hood. This hood works for me, but YMMV. Just understand that this is a bargain hood, and don't expect $100 features from it. If you've got that down, you should be OK with it.

Totally Awesome - much more than i expected
This hood and the bright white led daylights and blue led moonlights are a fantastic addition to my aquarium. Although the content list said there were two clear covers for the led unit i received only one, but i did receive six lid clips (3 small and 3 large) and only four were listed on the content list. I read most of the comments/reviews prior to purchasing the hood and very nearly did not purchase, but i am so glad i did. i absolutely love the brighter daylight led lamps and the blue led moonlights are superb and just the right brightness for my fish at night-time and makes it easy for them to rest or sleep. i bought the hood for my 20 gallon aquarium - which is 24 long, 12 wide, and 16 high. And while the hood does not measure exactly 24x12 it fits snuggly inside the rim of the aquarium if you use the correct clips. i read a number of reviews from people who had problems with the clips at the rear of the tank. i attached the small clips to the frame and then attached the hood. The large clips made my hood too loose, but the small clips were perfect - keeping my hood tight and within the frame. Another thing about the hood - the rear cut-outs for cords, filters, heater etc. - i learned from my last hood not to totally remove the cut-outs and to cut only the side side tabs leaving the inside tabs uncut - and the cut-outs remain flexible in case at some point you want to change the set-up of your aquarium. i had lost a few fish to suicide by jumping out of the space between equipment and cords. i would highly recommend this hood to anyone who wants a hood that looks great on the aquarium, fits perfectly, and provides lighting which is perfect for this size aquarium. This is my first hood with blue led moonlight lamps and it is very appealing (and not too bright) in the darkness of my bedroom.

Great hood for the price!!!!
I really like to overfilter my tanks so when I purchased several aquariums that came with the whole kit (hey it was cheaper that way) I ended up replacing several of the filters with better, bigger ones found here on Amazon. Long story short throughout our adventures in fishkeeping we ended up with an extra 10 gallon aquarium and several extra filters but were short a hood. My husband decided that it would be fun to put some glow fish into the extra 10 gallon and we wanted to make them pop. I was shocked by the prices on just buying a hood by itself. Even the regular hoods with the basic lighting and the pet stores were outrageous on the price, never mind LED. My husband found this one here on Amazon and we had to give it a try. It's not a perfect fit and it is low profile so the filter we have does stick out from the back. It has these clips that you have to fit on the tank frame itself to attach the hood to so truth be told it isn't really super high quality but for the price it's definitely worth it and a really great find. However, the lighting more than makes up for any small shortcomings the hood has. It is so good that we really didn't realize how bad and how yellow looking the other hoods we have with the regular lighting were making out tanks look. Plus, I don't have to worry about adjusting temperature in the tanks to account for temperature differences between night and day during the high volume of heat the regular lights put out, since it's LED it's really bright and stays cool. Plus I love the fact that it has two settings. The mixed white coloring is perfect for daytime and the blue really sets the glow fish stand out. Just due to cost alone I am going to try out some basic blue and pink bulbs in out other three ten gallon tanks. Truth be told though I'll most likely end up eventually replacing those hoods one by one with this one. Why spend all of that time cleaning, decorating, and caring for your fish and their home only to view them under poor lighting conditions?

Great lid
Fits my tank great! I like that it is hinged. The only thing I have trouble with is when I open it up, the light falls out the top, other than that it’s great and works well with my tank.

Awesome hooded LED light for the price
I was a little hesitant to purchase this light online after reading some of the negative reviews. The problem with moisture corroding the lighthing system is said to be resolved by Marineland, but I sealed the area with silicone just in case. Other than that this cannopy provides more light with a more natural look than the hood that came with my 10 gallon Top Fin setup. The lighting is great, and we especially love the "moonlight" effect that is created by the night lights. It is a very welcomed addition to our tank. The lighting does create a little bit of shadow on the very edges of the tank, but the aquatic life in our tank seem to enjoy the shade (and it is very little). The look of the hood took more time for me to become comfortable with. Our previous hood had the high back sloped look, and the Marineland is honestly more like a bubble in the middle of the hood. I had no problem fitting my Tetra Whisper EX20 HOB filter in the cutout. There are a couple of notches for hoses and power cables near the hinges. One of the best features of this hood are the hinges. I love having the ability to lift my hood with one hand to feed, or to tilt the hood back while cleaning out the thank. Before I would have to remove the hood and deal with the condensation before I fed or did anything to the tank. Now all of the water just runs back into the tank as I lift the hood. The question I am still unsure of about the tank is whether the LEDs are powerful enough for low light plants. Our tank is all artificial except for two Marimo Moss Balls, and these are the lowest of low light plants. I have yet to see a calculation for how much light is being put out, and I am not ready to add plants to this tank. My understanding, if you are looking to do a planted thank this is not the hood for you

Update: After 3 years, I'm going back to my old hood
Update 8/17/18: Three years and the light is half dead (maybe 3/4 dead, the blue doesn't work at all and only the left half of the white work). You can buy a replacement light, but since I've been so unhappy with the whole thing, I think I'm going to put my old hood back on, and put some submersible LED lights in. I see some on Amazon for much cheaper than the Marineland replacement light. This thing is very much not waterproof, which I think is at least part of the problem. Even though the hood has a plastic piece under the light, it slides out for cleaning, so it totally lets moisture through to the light. I really can't recommend this product at all. Update 10/29/15: I did end up keeping the hood, and my tank has developed a very bad algae bloom from the center of the front glass down to the gravel, which I attribute to the light. It is a strange bright blue green color, I have never seen anything like it before I had this LED light (I've been keeping freshwater fish for 16 years). I have live plants, so I don't want to use herbicide, but it's very persistent, so I may need to remove my plants temporarily and treat the tank... I hate doing that though, because then I worry about the fish getting sick from messed up water chemistry. Original review: The lights are very bright, and it surely takes less electricity than my old fluorescent, but that's about all the positives I've seen so far. On to the negatives: 1. The hood does not QUITE fit. It is a millimeter or so too big, so when you close it one side or the other is up above the top of the aquarium, and the light really highlights it. You can kind of shove it in and down, but then it just bows up in the middle and since the light then shows there, it's not worth the effort. Maybe you have to buy the same brand of tank?? I put it on my existing tank I've had for years, no idea what brand. 2. The hood is curved in a dome-like shape, so you can't really set anything on top of it. 3. The light itself is actually very small, so the edges of the tank are not as bright. The light is very bright though, so it's not too bad. 4. The blue lights are pretty much useless if you use a timer. If you manually turn off your lights, I think it would be cool. I think the company should have built in a timer so that you could have it go to blue at night automatically. But outlet timers just work by cutting the power and you leave it switched to white (or blue, but it's dim) all the time. 5. The clips you put on the tank to hold the hinges are very annoying to install. 6. If you are setting up a brand new tank, maybe you will find the next few things slightly less annoying. The filter "hole" is more to the right, but on my old hood (and I believe most hoods) it was more to the left. So I had to slide the filter over, and since my tank is against a wall, it was a pain. My old hood only opened at the front half, and so when I set up my tank under some shelves, it had enough room to open, but now with the whole thing hinged, there is not enough room. It's fine if I'm just feeding, but if I ever want to keep the hood open without holding it (cleaning, for example) I'm going to have to rig something to hold it open. Conclusion: overall, it's pretty annoying and I might return it. But the price was good and the light is bright and energy efficient, so I'll keep it for a few days and then decide if it's too annoying to deal with long-term.
