desertcart.com: CCNA Routing and Switching Portable Command Guide: 9781587204302: Empson, Scott: Books Review: Great Reference! - This book does not go over the inner workings of everything. It gives defined lists of commands used to do specific jobs and the main ideas of operation, troubleshooting, & configuration. It also have plenty of examples, with configurations & network diagrams, so you can configure and test out the configs. It is a great reference book, especially if you are looking at certification & can't recall specific commands but also if you just need a memory boost. It covers IPv4 subnetting, CLI, IPv6 commands, Admin & Troubleshooting, IP Services, WANs, and all the basic commands for routing & switching. There is also a great trick in the "How to Subnet" section called "The Enhanced Bob Maneuver". It can easily be used to determine number of subnets & hosts and can be extended to be useful for VLSM. It's small & easy to remember too, which is great! I'm glad I bought this book & highly recommend it as a great reference for the basics of Cisco networking & for assisting when you are working on the CCNA. Review: Essential Reference - This book wasn't required for my CCNA course, but I got it anyway - and so glad I did! The book is easily laid out for looking up solutions quickly, and it answers most questions directly related to class material. Because it's written by an independent author (although the book is approved by Cisco), it's a lot easier to read than the Cisco material, and I found it helpful to have the concepts explained in a different way. -When I already mostly understand a concept, reading the appropriate section in this book helps to solidify the knowledge, and -When I used to know a chain of router commands but can't quite remember, this is where I turn first. Whether you're taking the CCNA through a training center or by self-study, I highly recommend this book! Please not it's not really a stand-alone course; you'd need other CCNA materials to actually learn the course. This is just a quick review of how-tos in building a network.

Very helpful guide sort of...
Good lots of cisco commands along with examples on how to use them. Bad No index for individual commands, Only chapters like OSPF and EIGRP. If you have a general idea about what you want to do the guide is great you can find your command in one of the chapters. If you are starting out, finding a command is hard sometimes and takes up your time. "ip-domain name test.com" is the command correct and if not what chapter would I look for an example?

OMG!!
Very helpful if you are new to command prompt and/or networking. Inside front cover is basic list on how to set up a network. Then the book is step by step with all the commands you need. Best part, there is no appendix at the back. Just a list titled "What do you want to do?". Then list things like set enable password, or set up vty lines. Each followed by the page number to find it in the book.

CCNA/ CCNP best friend
this is the reference book if you are taking CCNA or CCNP. as you know you can't memorize all of the command, I mean there is thousands of commands in configuring the routers and switches. So this book helps you to configure the devices. Recommended for those who are Cisco students, this is the best investment you can invest in networking world. no doubt 5 stars from me.

Great Book! A must have for beginners.
A must have to get started with Cisco routers and switches. Excellent explanation of commands used. One of two books I used to reteach myself Cisco networking years after taking a course and never using what I learned. This book makes it easy to learn the basics.

Great for professionals or beginners.
Are you CCNA certified or planning to be? This book is great. It just tells you what you need. No shuffling around looking for things. It is very well put together. I love this book. I am upset that it took me so long to buy it.
